Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network) recognizes record number of hospitals for achievements in organ and tissue donation

TORONTO, ON– Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network) is pleased to announce that 49 hospitals, an increase of 5 hospitals over 2022/2023, across the province are being honoured through the 2023/2024 Hospital Achievement Awards. Presented annually, the awards recognize the hard work and dedication demonstrated by hospitals in integrating organ and tissue donation into quality end-of-life care.

Hospitals across Ontario supported 380 deceased donors, providing life-saving organ transplants to 1,075 individuals. Many more lives were enhanced through the gift of tissue from 1,900 donors.

Awards are distributed to hospitals that have met or exceeded the provincial benchmarks in the following categories that spotlight excellence within the organ and tissue donation process:

  • Hospital Achievement Award – Provincial Conversion Rate, awarded to 29 hospitals, an increase of four hospitals over 2022/2023. The conversion rate is the percentage of potential organ donors (patients who die in a hospital setting and are deemed medically suitable for donation) who went on to become actual donors.
  • Hospital Achievement Award – Provincial Eligible Approach Rate, awarded to 27 hospitals for demonstrating leading practices by facilitating a donation discussion with eligible patients/families of patients at end of life.
  • Hospital Achievement Award – Provincial Routine Notification Rate, awarded to 4 hospitals for achieving a 100 per cent routine notification rate, which is the percentage at which hospitals notify Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network) when a patient has died and there may be potential for organ and/or tissue donation.
  • Outstanding Achievement Award – Provincial Routine Notification Rate, awarded to 5 hospitals for demonstrating leading practices in routine notification with only a single missed notification in 2023/2024.
  • Award of Excellence, awarded to 14 hospitals, double the number from 2022/2023, for meeting or exceeding the provincial target for conversion rate or eligible approach rate for four or more consecutive years, demonstrating an outstanding commitment to the implementation or donation leading practices.

On average, 1,400 people in Ontario are waiting for a lifesaving organ and thousands more are in need of a transformative tissue transplant. Every three days someone dies while they wait for their gift of life. One organ donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance as many as 75 others through the gift of tissue.

“The success of organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ontario relies on the hard work and dedication of our hospital partners,” said Rebecca Cooper, Vice President, Ontario Renal Network and TGLN. “Together, Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network) and our hospital partners work to ensure that the wishes of potential donors are realized. Every Ontarian has the potential to save or enhance a life one day by registering to be a donor and speaking with their family about their wishes.”

“The Hospital Achievement Awards reflect our shared and ongoing commitment to implementing leading donation practices, integrating donation as part of high-quality end-of-life care, and supporting a culture of donation in Ontario,” said Dr. Andrew Healey, Provincial Medical Director – Donation, Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network). “Organ donation is a complex process that requires teamwork, trust and compassion, and we are proud to partner with Ontario’s hospitals to fulfill the end-of-life wishes of donors and their families, and ultimately save and enhance lives.”

Only 35 per cent of eligible Ontarians are currently registered as organ and tissue donors. Anyone 16 years or older with a valid Ontario health card can register – either in person at any ServiceOntario location or online at www.beadonor.ca. Register to donate and speak with your family about your wishes. Visit www.beadonor.ca to register or find out more.
