Cancer and Renal Systems Plans Released

For more than 15 years, multi-year provincial plans have provided direction to improve the performance of the cancer and kidney systems and to improve outcomes for patients in Ontario.

Ontario Health has released the sixth Ontario Cancer Plan and fourth Ontario Renal Plan, both spanning the years 2024 to 2028. These plans build on the solid foundations of previous plans, which have led to progressive advancements in the way cancer and kidney services are managed and delivered across this province. They ensure there is a system in place dedicated to reducing the burden of cancer and chronic kidney disease and providing high-quality  care when and where people in Ontario need it.

These system plans:

  • bring together many partners within our complex health system
  • clearly identify key priorities to guide our work at all levels
  • focus our efforts where they are most needed
  • advise the government to direct major initiatives and funding decisions
  • inform the development of regional cancer and renal plans

Collaborative and Consultative Planning Process

Our process to develop Ontario Cancer Plan 6 and Ontario Renal Plan 4 was collaborative, consultative, and iterative. We consulted with program areas across Ontario Health, our clinical leaders, regional cancer and renal programs, patient and family advisors, and health system partners across Ontario. We are grateful for their insights to help identify opportunities for improvement across the cancer and kidney systems.

Connected and Integrated Systems

“For many years, Cancer Care Ontario and the Ontario Renal Network demonstrated a commitment to improving the performance of the cancer and kidney systems in Ontario. Ontario Health builds on that legacy,” says Judy Linton, Executive Vice President, Acute and Hospital-Based Care and Chief Nursing Executive, Ontario Health. “As a single, integrated provincial agency, Ontario Health can leverage the collective expertise, skilled resources, innovative solutions and digital programs of all our team members to better integrate the health system to drive improved and equitable health outcomes, experiences and value.”

The goals of these plans align with many of Ontario Health’s strategic priorities (as outlined in our Annual Business Plan) and achieving these goals will advance the foundational and transformational work of our organization. Together we are building a more integrated system that enables our programs to work more effectively and seamlessly with our partners in the broader health system, including primary care, palliative care, mental health and others. This will help us address the acute and chronic health care needs of people within one well-coordinated health care system.
