Data Standards

Patients benefit when health care providers can access and understand their health information at the point of care. Data Standards make this possible by supporting the consistent exchange of information between systems, also known as interoperability.

An implementation guide* is a technical specification that explains how to use a standard for a specific health care use case, system, or jurisdiction. It may include business requirements, rules, data structures, terminology, examples, and testing resources. An implementation guide supports interoperability between systems, but it is not a complete end-to-end implementation manual.

Older specifications may be removed when they are no longer current. Contact us to request a previous version.

* The term “implementation guide” is used here as defined in the HL7 standard.
