Position Summary

Ontario Health is seeking expressions of interest for the position of Provincial Medical Director (PMD), Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network). This is a unique opportunity to provide strategic leadership to the Ontario Renal system. This opportunity is open to all qualified candidates.

The Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) Provincial Medical Director is accountable to act as a leader to drive the implementation of Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network)’s strategic priorities and provides strategic clinical leadership for the work of Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network), including guidance to Provincial and Regional Medical Leads. The Provincial Medical Director works in collaboration with the Interim Vice President, Ontario Renal Network, Director, Renal Clinical Programs and Director, Renal and Transplant Funding, Planning and Performance to provide strategic leadership in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of chronic kidney disease (CKD) services in Ontario in alignment with the Ontario Renal Plan 4 and Ontario Health’s values and goals.

Accountabilities

The Provincial Medical Director, Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) is accountable to act as a leader to drive the implementation of Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network)’s strategic priorities and provides strategic clinical leadership for the work of the Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network), including overall guidance to Provincial and Regional Medical Leads. The Provincial Medical Director works in collaboration with the Interim Vice President, Ontario Renal Network, Director, Renal Clinical Programs and Director, Policy, Planning and Evaluation of the ORN to provide strategic leadership in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of CKD services in Ontario.

  • Provide strong, visionary leadership at the provincial level.
  • Provide strategic clinical leadership for the work of the Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network), including leadership of Provincial and Regional Medical Leads.
  • Ensure the views of nephrologists are known to Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) Leadership and Ontario Health, Acute and Hospital-Based Care Executive Leadership and integrated into strategies and activity.
  • Establish and maintain effective links with relevant clinical communities on behalf of the Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) and work within a context of multi-disciplinary providers.
  • Develop and support execution of a strategy to engage CKD professionals in advancing the goals of the ORP 4 and beyond.
  • Regular participant in Ontario Health executive and Board committee meetings when agenda includes issues relevant to ORN.
  • Serve as a member of the Ontario Health Clinical Council and provide advice to Ontario Health’s Chief Medical Executive and Chief Nursing Executive.
  • Demonstrate in-depth, up-to-date knowledge as it relates to CKD care in Ontario.
  • Promote a patient-centred approach and ensure the work of the program is undertaken in accordance with the ORP 4 and Ontario Health’s strategy.
  • Champion quality, patient-centredness, equity and innovation.
  • Establish effective links with relevant provincial, national and international organizations in nephrology, and represent the Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) at key provincial, national and international tables.
  • Identify appropriate external opportunities for Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) involvement.
  • Work with the clinical community to scan the environment and formulate advice on emerging issues that require proactive attention from government and/or system leaders.
  • Provide guidance to inform Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) activities and programs of work.
  • Provide or oversee clinical input so that the Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) can provide a timely response to externally raised issues (e.g., media, government).
  • Respond to advice requests from the Ministries of Health and Long-Term Care; act as a spokesperson for Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) issues.
  • Oversee clinical program reviews upon request by the Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and commitment to, Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) positions and projects.
  • Support the continued integration of the Ontario Health (Ontario Renal Network) with other Ontario Health divisions.

Qualifications

  • Practicing Nephrologist in Ontario (or physician with experience in nephrology care where applicable), in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Canada), with over 15 years clinical experience.
  • Privileges at a Regional Renal Program hub hospital.
  • Strong understanding of Ontario's health care environment, particularly with a systems focus on the challenges and issues facing renal care in Ontario. Expert knowledge and currency with medical literature and evidence-based guidelines, as it pertains to renal care.
  • Knowledge of health system performance measurement and management, and how this can be used as a tool to promote change.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementation of change.
