Ontario Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Program

The Ontario Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Program is the first of its kind in Canada. It is designed to save lives by promoting early detection and prevention of aortic ruptures.

Our Goals

  • Early detection: Identify abdominal aortic aneurysms before they burst.
  • Prevent aneurysms from bursting: Reduce the risk of aneurysms bursting through timely diagnosis and treatment.
  • Lower mortality rates: Decrease the number of deaths associated with undiagnosed abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
  • Improve quality of life: Offer early interventions to prevent serious complications and improve long-term health outcomes.
  • Raise awareness: Educate at-risk populations, such as those age 65 and older, about the risks of AAA and the benefits of screening.

What We Do

We support comprehensive and coordinated abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening services for all eligible people in Ontario, focusing on early detection and prevention of AAA for people ages 65 and older.

The Program promotes evidence-based guidelines for screening protocols and follow-up care. We ensure this guidance is effectively communicated and implemented in practice. Our oversight helps people in Ontario get standardized, high-quality AAA screening services when necessary.

To guide our efforts, we collaborate with:

  • primary care providers
  • partners in clinical and diagnostic services
  • people with lived AAA experience
  • experts in vascular health and epidemiological research
