NORSTAR: Postgraduate Elective Learners
This NORSTAR stream provides travel and accommodation expense reimbursement to medical residents and fellows from Canadian medical schools completing electives in the North East and North West Ontario Health Regions.
Steps for Learners:
- Apply for and confirm an elective opportunity through the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSM U) electives portal
- Each month, NOSM U provides the NORSTAR team with a list of residents and their confirmed electives
- Only those electives approved by NOSM U are eligible for expense reimbursement through this stream
- Review the NORSTAR Postgraduate Elective Learner Expense Claim Form for expense reimbursement eligibility and receipt requirements
- Purchase travel and accommodations for the elective, keeping relevant receipts
- Complete the elective
- Submit a completed NORSTAR Postgraduate Elective Learner Expense Claim Form with all supporting documentation to NORSTAR for expense reimbursement
Steps for Communities
- Work with NOSM U’s Electives Office to organize, post, and confirm postgraduate elective opportunities
- Host the learner for the elective, with educational supervision via NOSM U faculty
Eligible Northern Ontario Communities
- Only communities in Ontario Health’s North West and North East Regions (excluding Huntsville, Bracebridge, and Gravenhurst) are eligible for NORSTAR:
- The North West includes communities from Manitouwadge in the east, to Kenora and the Manitoba border in the west, and the Hudson Bay Coast to the north.
- The North East includes communities from Wawa in the west, Parry Sound to the south, Mattawa to the east, and the James Bay Coast to the north
- Note: Huntsville, Bracebridge, and Gravenhurst are not eligible for NORSTAR
