Position summary

Ontario Health is seeking expressions of interest from qualified physicians for the positions of two North West Regional Clinical Co-Lead, Emergency Medicine.

This is a unique opportunity to represent Ontario Health and collaborate with regional stakeholders and provide clinical leadership to the evolution of the emergency medicine system in Ontario. Reporting directly to the Vice President, Clinical Programs for the North West OH Region, with indirect reporting and accountability to the Provincial Clinical Lead, Emergency Medicine, this role plays an instrumental role in shaping regional emergency medicine delivery systems and implementing regional initiatives aligned to provincial priorities. The two co-leads will work together to optimize the NW region’s emergency medicine coverage from both the central hub ED and outlying regional EDs.

Accountabilities

  • Champion Priority Programs: Drive the advancement of Ontario Health’s priority initiatives within regional emergency departments, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and measurable outcomes.
  • Provide Comprehensive Leadership: Offer robust clinical, operational, and system-wide leadership and oversight for designated Regions and Emergency Departments, fostering the development and implementation of high-quality, standardized regional emergency medicine programs.
  • Cultivate Strategic Partnerships: Forge and sustain strong partnerships with clinical experts and stakeholders to build consensus and propel Ontario Health’s strategic priorities and initiatives forward.
  • Align Regional Objectives: Collaborate with local, regional, and system leadership to identify, strategize, and achieve specific regional goals and objectives that enhance emergency care delivery.
  • Drive System-Level Implementation: Engage with regional partners to effectively implement, monitor, and enhance regional activities that support provincial plans and initiatives, ensuring alignment with system-wide strategies. Collaborate with Health Service Providers (HSPs) to enhance Emergency Department (ED) performance, optimize patient flow, and elevate the quality of care
  • Enhance Care Coordination: Ensure seamless coordination and integration of care within the region by collaborating with local partners and service delivery organizations, including Ontario Health Teams (OHTs), to optimize patient pathways.
  • Address Capacity and Access: Hold accountability for addressing issues related to capacity, access, and patient flow in partnership with Ontario Health, ensuring that operational challenges are swiftly resolved.
  • Promote Equitable Access: Work proactively with regional partners and leadership to enhance equitable access to emergency services and improve outcomes for vulnerable and marginalized populations, as well as other equity-deserving groups.
  • Establish Strong Regional Foundations: Collaborate with regional administrative leadership to build a solid foundation for program development, including the establishment of a regional emergency medicine leadership table or equivalent body to support best practices, implementation, and performance management.
  • Represent at Leadership Tables: Serve as the representative for the corresponding Ontario Health Region at key regional and provincial clinical leadership tables, spearheading interdisciplinary collaboration to bolster emergency system capacity.
  • Lead Development of Emergency Services: Actively participate with clinical and administrative leaders to define, guide, monitor, and drive the development and delivery of coordinated, standardized, and high-quality emergency medicine services.
  • Support Data-Driven Improvement: Work closely with regional partners to ensure that data collection, reporting, and digital infrastructure are robust enough to support service providers in their monitoring and improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Practicing physician in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and either the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with a CFPC “CAC-EM” or FRCP in Emergency Medicine credential
  • A minimum of five years of clinical experience in emergency medicine
  • Experience in a leadership role focused on quality and system improvement
  • In-depth understanding of Ontario's health care system, with particular focus on the challenges and issues facing emergency medicine in Ontario
  • Expert knowledge of current best practices, healthcare literature, and evidence-based guidelines, as it pertains to emergency medicine
  • Knowledge of health system performance measurement and management approaches, and how this can be used as a tool to promote change
  • Aptitude for system thinking and ability to analyse information for sound decision making
  • Demonstrated commitment to equitable and person centred care, as well as public accountability
  • Excellent skills in relationship building, communication and leadership experience in establishing strong relationships and building consensus
  • Demonstrated experience in implementation of large-scale change in the health sector
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse partners and groups to reach consensus
