Position summary

Ontario Health is seeking expressions of interest for the position of Transplant Support Physician, Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN). This is a unique opportunity to promote a culture of transplantation in Ontario and provide strategic leadership and expertise to the evolution of the provincial transplant system. This opportunity is open to all qualified candidates.

Accountabilities

The goals of the Transplant Support Physician role include providing medical direction, leadership, consultation and support to TGLN staff and hospital bedside teams in transplantation practices. The Transplant Support Physician will also serve as a clinical resource to improve all aspects of transplantation in order to maximize the opportunity for potential transplantation.

The primary responsibilities of this role include the following:

  • Be a member of the 24/7 on-call physician team to provide telephone support and advice to TGLN
  • Work with the TGLN’s Provincial Resource Centre, Organ and Tissue Donation Coordinator(s), or Manager On Call in selected cases based on identified criteria
  • Using Health Canada regulations provide expert knowledge around donor medical suitability screening and provide guidance in the assessment of risk for organs for transplant
  • Using provincial algorithms provide guidance in situations where questions arise surrounding organ allocation and support consistent, safe, fair and equitable opportunity for transplant across the Province
  • Provide direction in the donation and transplantation process when conflict occurs between parties
  • Make recommendations on whether delays in recovery should be supported to enhance organ transplantation
  • Provide feedback on recommendation brought forward to support donors and to increase organs available for transplant
  • Assist in drafting recommendation and policies that support the mandate of TGLN
  • Assist in maximizing organ yield and utilization
  • Participate in quarterly practice rounds to identify educational and improvement opportunities
  • Provide a report to the Transplant Lead, TGLN on any cases that require a review

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in organ allocation and solid organ transplantation
  • Actively practicing physician and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and other relevant college
  • Understanding of Ontario's health care system, health care delivery program operations, community-based health care delivery models and related regulations
  • Ability to apply your knowledge when providing strategic advice and ensure that project planning and management standards meet the business needs of stakeholders
  • Issues management and strategic orientation skills to link current actions to strategies or long-term perspective
  • Ability to champion excellence using consultation, communication and relationship management skills and elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources
  • Well-developed influencing, negotiating, consensus and counseling skills
  • Highly developed time management skills and ability to prioritize
  • Strong written and oral skills
