New Provincial Head, Oncology Nursing Announced

Maritza Carvalho, an accomplished oncology nursing leader, joins Ontario Health as Provincial Head for Oncology Nursing.

Ontario Health is pleased to announce Maritza Carvalho as our new Provincial Head for Oncology Nursing.

Maritza is an accomplished leader in oncology nursing with extensive experience advancing high-quality, person-centred cancer care. She is currently Manager of Professional Practice for the Oncology Program at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network, where she is recognized for her commitment to elevating nursing practice and fostering a collaborative, patient-focused environment. In her previous role as the Regional Nursing Lead with the Mississauga Halton/Central West Regional Cancer Program, she successfully managed complex oncology care delivery and drove significant improvements in clinical standards, staff development and patient outcomes.

Known for championing the unique role of nurses across the cancer care continuum, Maritza is passionate about supporting nurses to work to their highest ability, leading quality improvement initiatives, and addressing critical needs in recruitment, retention and wellbeing within the oncology nursing workforce.

In her new role as Provincial Head, Maritza will provide visionary and strategic leadership for oncology nursing at the provincial level. This includes overseeing provincial standards for oncology nursing education and training, promoting evidence-based practices, identifying and addressing system-level issues in oncology nursing, and fostering stakeholder collaboration to ensure high-quality, person-centred care.
